After eight years and one appeal in court against McDonald’s, the Malaysian restaurant McCurry can now breathe easy. A court in the country has finally ruled that other companies could use the prefix Mc too, as long as they distinguished their product from McDonald’s.
The restaurant chain’s owner claims McCurry was, in any case, short for “Malaysian Chicken Curry”.
Back in India, a host of trademark battles might be looming as American brands set up business in the country. Bennett, Coleman & Company (the Times of India publishers) have challenged the publication of the Pearon group’s Financial Times in India since its own supplement has the same name. The hiking gear company Timberland has found, to its dismay, that Woodland (with a similar logo to boot) is an already thriving brand.
